Paver patio installation in Fort Collins

Turn a tired patch of bluegrass or a cramped builder's slab into a patio you'll use from the first warm week of spring to the last fall evening.

A paver patio is made of individual concrete or stone units laid over compacted gravel, with sand filling the joints and a rigid edge holding the perimeter. Around Fort Collins, where swelling clay and winter frost both push on anything built at ground level, that flexible construction is the main reason people pick pavers over another poured slab.

How is a patio built?

  1. Plan and locate. The layout is marked and a Colorado 811 locate request goes in at least two full business days ahead.
  2. Dig out. Sod and organic topsoil are removed so the base rests on firm subgrade. Very soft or wet clay may be over-excavated or stabilized.
  3. Build the base. Crushed gravel is placed and compacted in lifts, sloped gently away from the house.
  4. Lay the pavers. A thin, level bedding layer is screeded and the pavers are set in the chosen pattern, with cuts at the edges.
  5. Lock it in. Edge restraint is fastened, joint sand is swept in and the surface is compacted.

How should a patio handle clay and water?

The Colorado Geological Survey warns that letting water pond near a foundation and irrigating right next to the house both make expansive soil problems worse. A good patio plan sends water away: a slight pitch off the house, downspouts piped or extended past the patio, and sprinkler heads adjusted so they don't spray the pavers or soak the soil at the edges. Ask the contractor how they'll handle drainage on your lot before you pick a pattern.

What affects the price?

  • Size and shape of the patio
  • Paver style, pattern and border details
  • Removing sod, an old slab or landscape rock
  • Soil conditions and how much base is needed
  • Backyard access for equipment
  • Steps, walls, lighting or a fire feature added on

Every yard is different, so the contractor prices the job after walking the site, checking the soil and grade, and talking through the layout and pavers you like. We don't quote prices, and any number given over the phone is only a rough starting point.
